Born to Run Ultramarathon, May 19, 2012

Ever heard of the book “Born to Run”? It’s the story of the Tarahumara people and their ability to run hundreds of miles without rest. Great book, but what is super amazing is that Luis Escobar, a photographer that captured many images of the Tarahumara people lives in Santa Maria! So close to us! Apparently, he is hosting a Trail Camp on March 18, 2012 from 8-10am on Bishop’s Peak! And then, there is the Born to Run Ultramarathon!

Stadium Park, Pine Mountain, Blue Oak Trails, Atascadero

The Pine Mountain Trail at Stadium Park in Atascadero is my husband’s favorite place to run. It’s close enough to our house that he can go straight there and back and has a nice 5K while enjoying the beauties of the ‘mountain’. We’ve hiked this trail several times with our family as well. The trailhead is at Stadium Park entrance off Highway 41. It is .82 miles which is just the right length for little legs. Off the Pine Mountain trail, you can find the Blue Oak trail and the ALPS trail.

You can find more information about these trails using the North County Trail Guide.

The Atascadero Land Preservation Society (ALPS) has had a key role in maintaining and developing the Stadium Park Trails. Check out the the ALPS Facebook Page.

CrossFit Open WOD 12.1

I love CrossFit. Absolutely LOVE CrossFit. I’ve been going to CrossFit Northern Inferno in Templeton (technically Paso Robles) for a couple of months and they are amazing. The coaches explain the movements well and make sure you understand it all before each workout. They are the best. No doubt. You have to try it, but we’ll save that for another post! Today, I am doing my first ever WOD for the CrossFit Open. It took a little convincing for me to sign up since I still can’t do all the movements and I scale pretty much everything. But, what better way to see my improvements! For those of you not familiar with CrossFit, learn more here. And here you can find out more about how the Open is part of the CrossFit Games.

The CrossFit Open has one workout per week for five weeks. They posted the first WOD on Wednesday, February 22nd and the last WOD will be posted on March 21st. Athletes have until that Sunday at 5 p.m. to submit their results online. WOD 12.1 was posted on Wednesday and it is AMRAP (as many reps as possible) of Burpees in 7 minutes. Doesn’t that sound fun? Wish me luck!

The Bob Jones Trail

A friend asked me yesterday how long the Bob Jones trail was and I couldn’t give her an immediate response. The thing is, I should know this. We have gone on this trail several times. Walking. Strollering. Running. And Biking (with kids). So, I had to get to the bottom of this simple question.

Bob Jones Trail:
Distance: 2.3 Miles from the Bike Trail Start Parking Lot off Ontario Road to Avila Beach. This MAP says it all.
Trail Type: The trail is paved the entire way from the parking lot to the beach. It is wide and open for bikes, pedestrians and strollers. Lots of strollers. Lots more info here.

If you are looking for a family friendly paved trail, you’ve got to try this one. There are several benches along the way to rest and the kids love ending at the beach to play. Your kids will thank you.
